Professor Zhao is the mentor of PhD students in Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) and has been honored as the distinguished Professor of PUMC since 2015. She is also the primary mentor for NIH Fogarty and Fulbright Scholars in China, as well as the initiator and primary mentor of Chicago University D & A China Bridge Fellowship Program. She is a recipient of the 2015 International Agency for Research on Cancer/World Health Organization (IARC/WHO) Senior Visiting Scientist Award.


Professor Zhao received her Medical Diploma from Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences, her PhD degree in Epidemiology from Peking Union Medical College. She has worked as a visiting scholar for two years at National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (NCI/NIH), USA during 2003-2004 and 2013-2014. She has worked with scientists at IARC for a year on the exploration of appropriate cervical cancer screening programme models for China, and was selected as the IARC “50 for 50” future cancer research leader in 2016.

Professor Zhao serves as Research Committee Chair, Asia Oceania Research Organization on Genital Infections and Neoplasia (AOGIN); Education Committee Chair, Asian Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention (APOCP); Member of APEC Cervical Cancer Expert Group;Vice Leader of National Cervical Cancer Prevention Network Consortium, Cancer Foundation of China;and key members for other national professional societies in cancer prevention.


Professor Zhao has received a dozen of research grants and published over 160 peer reviewed articles, monographs and book chapters in Chinese and English, such as Lancet Oncol, J Natl Cancer Inst, Int J of Cancer et al. Her research has won several national scientific awards and have great scientific and practical significances to epidemiology, etiology and prevention of cervical cancer in China.
